Gents:
Since not much new content is being posted here on the forum lately,
I figured that I would start a thread about my current project to give you guys something to look at.

OK, So... I bought a beat 79 1000 sometime ago, but as so many projects go, it was delayed because life got in the way.
Making money, Vacations and a problematic second cervical spine fusion put the project on the back burner until recently.
I'm now back at it.
So here's what's happening:

A quick exploratory and... I had to take it apart:

Someone wasn't too gentle with these intake manifolds. Every one had different bolts.

Pulled the carbs and then the heads:

I wonder how many guys have tried to start their old bikes with this type of thing going on?

Looks like the belts are original: (another frame with damaged down tubes from the crash bars being over tightened)

Since I knew that I was going to do a bunch to this engine, I removed it from the bike and put it on my bench (desk):

I figured I'd just do everything to this engine short of splitting the cases.
All New Gaskets, Seals, Clutch, Water pump, Ignition, Paint:

This engine was very dirty on the inside with a lot of sludge in the sump.
I don't think that the oil was changed very often.

I flushed out the block with diesel. It was huge messy pain in the ass - but it did a really good job of
cleaning out the oil goop.

Yes it it a lot all at once. I'm just trying to bring everyone up to date.

Pics are from a couple of months back when I first started messing with it.
Then it was... start, stop, start, stop, start, stop, etc...

I've gotten in the habit of documenting my projects by taking pics.
Now that I've been back on this for a couple of weeks, I've made a lot of progress and taken more pics.

Stripped the paint off of the engine.
It took me 5 cans of brake cleaner and a can of acetone to get it clean enough for paint:

The cylinder walls you presented looked pretty smooth. You left the smooth surfaces alone, I trust?

I have a 76 chassis that I have been using as an engine stand.
It works really well as It holds the engine securely, gives me a place to mount the radiator, coils, etc.
without all of the other stuff in the way.
And it's mobile, I can put it on or take it off the lift as needed which is a big plus in my book.

This is the 4th. different engine that has been in it.

Here's the engine up on the lift, getting ready to put the heads on.
I have found that this approach works good because The engine is held securely in the frame and raised to a comfortable height.
The heads can be torqued a whole lot easier than trying to do it with the engine loose on the assembly bench.
