I am trying to catch up on current activities in the Wingdom and I see you and I have both been in "recovery" mode for a while. I hadn't heard that Pistol Pete had passed. He rebuilt the carbs on my first couple of bikes and was a great resource. Hope your shoulder continues to heal and good luck with this project.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:

Be careful turning discs, as that removes mass and mass is your friend for braking. Often better to source a new rotor if they are really bad. I pay no attention to small grooves in the rotors as that just increases surface area and the pads conform. Nice that the PO updated the steering bearings to tapered. Nice upgrade for sure.

Yes, he passed away a couple summers ago. He lived only ~10 miles from me, but I never met him until 2017, then in 2018 he invited me to show in his booth for WingDing in Knoxville. He had serial #002 there along with other GL1000s. He was a very nice gentleman, and great 'wing mechanic. My final PT is today. Hope you get to that point soon, too.

Todd54219 set me up with a great replacement Right side header. Now, just have to get cleared from the Wuhan Flu (all three of us had it) and I'll be back to cleaning duties.

Not much progress lately = been nursing this bad shoulder and then the first of December we all got the Wuhan Flu. Finally back in the garage (wife got me a new Fire TV for hanging from the ceiling there). Carbs are clean, rebuilt, and leak tested. Next is cleaning the engine so it can be repainted.

Pepper and I bot had deep colds of some sort but all four times tested negative for Covid. Getting out of the woods after 7 days of restricted activities. Carbs look good so good progress. It is well known that fresh paint on an engine increase speed by 10 mph so you will have that advantage.

Dumped the gallon of acetone that I was soaking the varnish out of Pete's tank with back into the can, dried all of that out, then added ~2 gallons of vinegar to it for de-rusting.

Finally feeling good enough to tackle this thing again. Will probably pay for it tomorrow, but the shoulder just isn't improving, so... Finalized the fuel tank vinegar cleaning, neutralized with baking soda, washed and rinsed, dried thoroughly and added over a half can of fogging oil.

Then, SHAZBOTT!! Well, not my first rodeo (although I haven't dealt with a broken belt before). Good is that the engine turns over easy (don't know about valve interference) and the coolant/oil both looked fine.

So, unplanned removal of Left head is due to see how much valve damage. And, building a couple idlers. Of course, I had a couple new belts ready for it but didn't expect to pull a head, so will have to order head gaskets. Bother.

Pulled the left head today. There was just a bit of "mud" in the #4 cylinder, which wiped right out leaving nice looking walls. Turned the head valve side up and filled the areas with isopropyl alcohol - surprisingly, there was no leakage! So, cleaning and reassembly (once gaskets come in next week) will be all that is required. Might replace seals on this side, but will NOT be lapping the seats. There is a very thin coating of Stellite on GL1000 seats, and lapping might take it off causing rapid wear.

I happened across this Nixon topic a week or so ago, and knew with confidence you meant this... Honda Valves Service Bulletin.

After seeing the broken timing belt and rusted pulleys associated with the left cylinder head, I'm glad the "mud" didn't damage that #4 cylinder bore. tumb2

Spent over five hours today getting the head gasket cement off of the head and block. They even used whatever they used on the head gasket on the water elbow gasket. Stuff reminded me of a sealer that we were forbidden to use on steam flanges in the Navy called Copaltite. Along with being and atmosphere contaminant until cured, about the only way to remove it from a steam flange was to cut the flanges off and weld on new ones. So anyway, the head is ready for gasket and re-installation. I'll use the copper spray coating on the head gasket. Gaskets and dowels (one was buggered getting it out) are due mid-week.

Well, I have the new head gasket in hand. And ONE of the idler bearings. I had ordered two at the same time from Amazon, but one came USPS today and the other is setting ~10 miles away at the UPS hub. Bother. Anyway, re-tapped the block, ran the bolts over the wire wheel in the drill press. The idlers are mounted on 10mm x 25mm bolts that I turned the heads on to fit through the holes in the arms with ~2mm flange on the backs. Same as I did on the Hunley. Mounting the idlers using nyloc nuts. The new belts are just looped on right now, until after I get the left head mounted and take the crank back to TDC on #1.

Although the other idler gets in Monday, I doubt there will be any progress next week. Doctor's appointments and jury duty will keep me occupied.
