Hello From the UK

#1

Post by RSTman »

Hi, everybody. I must admit to having been lurking here for a while. I bought a 77 K2 as a project about two years ago now, having completed restoration of a 76 Suzuki GT750.
The GL1000 is, and continues to be, a challenge! I am a complete GW newbee and never really been that interested. but the early 'plain Jane' ones have always looked nice IMO, add to that I like the unique mechanical format.
My project was bought as a non runner and it took me 18 months to get to run anything like well. Really impressed with the way the bike runs and rides, I'm now a Wing convert, only taken me 50 years of motorcycling!
I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this forum over the years, it has been a very valuable source of information, saving me time and money, although as many of you will know, restoring 70's Jap bikes is getting more expensive all the time. I hope I can make some contributions going forward.

Jerry

Welcome! Nice '77 - that year was my first 'wing. If you want to try color-matching the side covers, rsbikepaint.com is pretty good, and is a GB company. I used their water-borne paint on my '76 RD400c, and with SprayMax clear coat it came out great. I plan to use their base and candy for my '75 Anteres Red '75 GL1000 when the time comes.

Thanks for the welcome. The panels are all at my painters now. I wasn't so keen on the K2 sirius blue so going for the candy blue/green. The paint has indeed come from RS paint. The shelter sides look a lot better in the photo than they actually were. The flip up top had some surface rust and the lower side panels had been repainted (badly) at some time long ago. I have seen the blue green and it's an amazing colour, most photographs are miles away from what it really looks like. Almost went with the antares red though, a great colour.
I have a host of other stuff to do before the painted panels go anywhere near the bike. Not least the engine will have to be partly pulled to replace the neutral switch, it does work but has a slow oil leak past the bakelite insert. Tried to fix it but have given up and bought a new one. What a shame the switch isn't on the same side as the removeable frame rail - doh!
