I’m building a cafe racer 1984 with wheels, brakes, forks and rear end from a 1993. So far so good. I bought the Randakk bare minimum wiring harness; the instructions are pretty good but missing a diagram. I don’t know what original components I can leave out. For instance, do I need the regulator? Ignition control unit?

Welcome, being you say it is an 84, that would be the first year of the 1200. You certainly do need the regulator, and a few other things to make it work.

I'm sure that is a universal kit. No diagram. You could use the OEM diagram as a "reference" but the rest is all custom.

And yes, you need the regulator and the ICU.

Not to be insulting, but if you don't know that you need the regulator and the ICU, you need someone who DOES know to physically look over your shoulder. Tech support by forum post won't get you very far.

Yep, that's true. Don't start without that friend. Having said this, for a minimal harness I recommend a central unit like this to eliminate all that fusebox and relay and flasher stuff. Depending on where You live the bike needs parking lights, low and hi beam driving lights, l and r turn signals and a brake light. Maybe more, ask a policeman if You know one.
Further on You need an ignition key switch with the known functions, a kill switch and a horn.
Alternator, rectifier/regulator unit (dont reuse the 70s goldwing solution), battery, fan switch/motor, and the ignition system and Your bike should be ready for takeoff.
Fuel gauge/sensor, temp gauge/sensor, neutral switch/lamp, oil pressure switch/lamp are important for safety but not for function. Some bikes don't have any of these. At least the oil pressure I would insist on.

Some years ago a cousin & I were talking about our 'Wings. He lived out in the country and he said he knew there was an active GoldWing group in his area because they occasionally rode past his house. He wanted to get together with them but he said that by the time he heard their stereos coming there wasn't enough time to get his bike out before they were out of sight
