darn facebook groups

makes you realize good moderation... the LTD group got into a pissy war amongst a couple of people over real questions from a guy restoring a Ltd... telling them to calm it down I was told to roll in sh*t... well there you go...

All the groups are like that. I would never ask an open question on one, because of all the people who think a smart-azz answer is funny, the people who tell you to RTFU, the people who commiserate but contribute nothing, the people who tell you about the bike they used to have, the people who don't read the question through, and the people who don't read all the responses and so duplicate a previous one. In 20 responses, there MIGHT be 2 good answers.

i was just telling a friend how this site is great. you get answers within a few hours, trade parts as needed and no attitudes. we all have the same goal, enjoy the ride, help problem solve and love vintage bikes.

The thread I was following on Facebook was a guy in England trying to restore a LTD, and he was like all of us were in the beginning, needing help. Tried to steer him to ngwclub.

I am a member of a lot of Facebook groups. There is little of substance on any of them. I would not dream of taking part in any discussion on there. This forum is the best there is. I have to admit I read a lot more than I post, I do very little posting anywhere any more. It doesn't mean that I dont do anything, just that I keep it to myself.

You've got to have a thick skin to post. Takes a while to get a good understanding of these older GWs. Hard to decipher what is relevant to what you are doing. As Liam mentions, there is a lot of assumptions and misunderstandings. I'm learning this from my work on an ECU replacement for my '85 FI model. Cheers

you got that right!

I have found some useful information on the FB trailer pages, but every time there is a tire thread you have all the people who put a gummy bear in a near sidewall nail hole.... :IDTS:

You don't need Facebook. I post on the SE-i and Limited Edition FI page. Have yet to be slammed, still learning and there is a lot to know. My '85 1200 GW FI model is my retirement research project and it's keeping me busy. My ECU replacement project has taught me this. I correspond with a fellow in the UK regarding the ECU program code, he posted it on the GitHub forum. It is an interesting read for an FI geek.

Challenging accepted norms/practices is another way to get into a "pi#$%ng" contest, regardless of where you post. I have found that being an author is harder than being a critic.

Just my $0.02 worth. Three weeks and off to the warm climates for a break. Cheers

You are right of course. NGW was started to talk about older bikes with simple systems. I'm an older guy with older bikes. So, it works well for me.

There are a lot of newer resources out there that many of us have not heard of and they often show up on the FB groups.

What about the NGW Facebook group? I can find the group by clicking on "Facebook" at the top of any forum page and read the "About" page but not any of the content, since it is a private group. Does it have the sort of stuff Roger is talking about or is it just more of the same as this forum?

It is a private group to keep out the trolls. Several of our Moderators from here run that. They are not on it 24 hours a day but generally they keep it cleaned up pretty good. Mostly the same stuff but limited historical stuff and mainly a different audience
