1982 GL1100 exhaust

#1

Post by BigPappa46 »

After working on the motor, I can't get the exhaust back on. I mounted one side (per the manual) but when I tried to mount the other side it just won't match up. I put the crossover pipe in first but the headers or the rear mounting bracket will not align. I have no help. It's just me and I have bad shoulders and I'm working on a cement garage floor. ANY TIPS OR TRICKS???
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! Was this exhaust on the bike before? If so, it should line up pretty good. If not, then you have to push on some some areas to make it fit. Of course, when I took mine off, I lifted the whole bike up to pull mine off. Is there anyone to help you push them on better?

not sure if you took it apart in one piece, or in sections. one piece is best. in my opinion. in any case start by attaching both sides at the engine and work back. easier to adjust and line up each section in my opinion.

If a somewhat loud exhaust is not an issue you could put an angle grinder to the crossover pipes ;)
And then it will sound like this:

It's the original exhaust. No help. I figured I'd use a ratchet strap to pull it together. What do you think?

If the crossover pipes have no effect on engine performance, I may do that.

Crossover pipes have a limited effect, but they do help just a touch. I eliminated mine as the downside was bigger than the upside.
