California DJ's encourages injury to lane splitters

#1

Post by KLACKO »

The morning announcers on KITS 105.3, a San Francisco radio station, said they'd like to see car drivers open their doors into lane splitting motorcyclists.
Here's a link to the Bay Area Riders Forum:

Here's a Yamaha dealership that advertises on KITS. [Maybe they should rethink that idea. Maybe someone should send them an e-mail...]

Bay Area Yamaha
341 N Amphlett Blvd, San Mateo, CA
(650) 343-9750
sales@bayyamaha.com

And here's a link where complaints can be filed with the FCC...

I wonder how sturdy this "jack ***" thinks that a car door is. I'm sure that the impacting force would be enough to distroy the forks and make the bike uncontrolable, but I'm thinking that the bike would take the door off it's hinges. Even a 400lb bike would do some big damage to a car door.

Then you get into all the legal stuff. Simply put I think that door operator would be facing legal hell of trying to keep any two coins. Might have a hard time with insurance on something like that. I think it falls short of liability claims, and then you have all the tickets you would get for doing that. The biker might even have a case of assualt and battery. A lawyer could probably tell on that one.

As to it all I would say that I hope the Yamaha dealer yanks its advertising with the station in a public way, at least to there comunity.

Someone mentioned free speech on the forum you listed. I see it as you can say what you want, but don't be supprised if there is some reprisal. After all the other person is just as free to tell you off as you were to tell them off.

Here is a letter to the Yamaha dealer, sounds pretty threatening huh?
Hello, I was wondering what your advertising stance was on this KITS 105.3 station was going to be after the DJ's comments about opening doors on lane splitters.

My feelings are that your continued support of a station that has such views sends a poor message to the biker comunity that you serve.

I look forward to your response on this matter, have a good day.
I understand if there contracts keep them there for a while, but I would not be a fan of making up a new one.

First motorist to do that coould be charged with a criminal act, the extent depending upon what if any injurie occured to the rider. They would also be open to a civil suit. The DJ and the station itself could also be held legally liable.
A good bike mechanic only needs two tools, WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move, but should, use the WD40. If it does move but shouldn't use the duct tape.

checked out the original post .... seems the radio station is trying to downplay what was said ... hahaa ..after some responsive phone calls and emails to the station and the Yamaha Dealer whose ad was played shortly after the DJ's remarks .... amazing what can be done in numbers , eh.

Thanks for the link to respond direct to live105. I couldn't help but do a major flame, I used to listen to live105 during the alex bennett days when it was THE station and modern rock was modern rock.

Bay Area has big rider numbers as commute is hell in a cage, lane splitting is not against the law in california. Motorcycles take up less road during congested commute hours, use less oil, pollute less...... etc

Very important to promote motorcycle awareness whenever possible.....

The thing I remember about trafic and motorcycles was watching a video of a asain country (if memory serves me). It was a sort of typical intersection durring what looked like rush hour. Most of the stuff there was motorcycles and the bikes never seemed to stop moving. 5 minutes of those bikes would easly be the same as 30 minutes of cars.

It is too bad that we have slipped so low as to think that advocating harm to someone is an exceptable practice. My daughter who is in LE, also finds that the public is often negative about the work they do trying to enforce the laws.

road rage is not acceptable, and advocating (on the public airways) harming other people should be viewed as inciting to riot!
