The 2011 Slimey Crud Run (My First Run)

#1

Post by Track T 2411 »

So the stars finally aligned, thunder rolled, gales... I finally got to ride in the Slimey Crud Run, http://www.slimeycrudrun.com/ a semi-annual run here in south central Wisconsin. The weather was quite brisk, when we left the house at 9:00 A.M. it was 41 degrees, with winds gusting to 25 MPH. It didn't get much better, but it was worth it! BTW, this "run" is totally unorganized, there's no sign in, registration, etc. Just starts in Pine Bluff, Wisconsin (essentially a country byway crossroads with two bars and 7 or 8 homes), a few miles west of Madison, and ends in Leland, Wisconsin, which is not much bigger. Both beginning and end are full of bikes (estimates range from 1000 to 2000) all over the place, with the non-Harleys leading the count by 2 to 1. Participants arrive from several surrounding states, too.
The Cool part is, there's no easy, straight, normal way to get from Pine Bluff to Leland. First, you must cross the Wisconsin river, and there are only two bridges in any proximity, both of which require a run through the "twisties" in opposite directions. Virtually every road is a "motorcycle road!!!" The whole idea is to leave Pine Bluff in the late morning, wend your way however you like, however long you want, and get to Leland some time in the mid-afternoon. Food and drink are offered by the local taverns, and Law Enforcement is "present" but not too obnoxious. For the most part, participants are well mannered, and I happened to note that probably 90% of riders were wearing helmets...
As far as Goldwings, there were several 1500's and 1800's in view, I saw a couple of dressed 1200's, one 1200 standard with small aftermarket hard bags, three 1100's, all dressed, and ONE, ONE 1000, a 76 with a Vetter fairing and hondaline bags. We're seriously under represented here!

So, here's some pics...

Some other interesting stuff... (I'm not going to even try to hide my ignorance of year, model etc on most of these, just think they're cool...

I was just at slimey crud in the fall! Its a great time, hoping to go to again this fall, yeah not too many gl1000s that I saw, great time though. Check out the Grumpy Troll restaurant its fantastic! I think the town is in Mt Horeb.

Great ride, good people, and what other ride can you buy and eat a hand made ham and cheese on wonder bread at a local bar/gun store?
