Re: Yet another 1976 Supercharger project
it's like you're in my head, only farther along.... i think dirt bike forks would be worth looking at but are likely a large amount of work and you'll only have one brake disk (maybe still better than the "brakes" on these thingsQui-gon wrote:SM if I can get round extending the fork legs to allow for the smaller front wheel as I don't want to loose any ground clearance.

Re: Yet another 1976 Supercharger project
Think I am going down the cafe racer ish route for now.......The SM look will have to go on the back burner and a bit more research done regarding forks and brakes. I am not sure the forks etc. off modern "heavyweight" dirtbikes were ever designed to suspend and stop something this big. Maybe the bmw boxer twin trailie might?bladredhead wrote:it's like you're in my head, only farther along.... i think dirt bike forks would be worth looking at but are likely a large amount of work and you'll only have one brake disk (maybe still better than the "brakes" on these thingsQui-gon wrote:SM if I can get round extending the fork legs to allow for the smaller front wheel as I don't want to loose any ground clearance.) or possibly look for KTM duke/duke2 front end

Re: Yet another 1976 Supercharger project
i would be more worried about the GL frame being able to take the abuse. modern dirtbike forks, even off a 250, are designed to take some serious abuse from jumping off of big things. the brakes are an issue thoughQui-gon wrote:Think I am going down the cafe racer ish route for now.......The SM look will have to go on the back burner and a bit more research done regarding forks and brakes. Re: Yet another 1976 Supercharger project
Thanks for all the encouragement! A bit more progress yesterday:
Left side camshaft back in along with some of the black painted parts:

Cut this off the end of the right side camshaft:

The standard camshaft oil seal just fits!:

Right side camshaft back in the head. It just needs a cover either making or from a later model without the fuelpump and tacho drive:

Frame mods next on the '76 frame and tearing down the '77 to remove the goodies from it.

That is sweet! I ofter hear people not wanting to rebuilt an engine, but you give me great hope. Was it difficult getting the parts? Did you need oversize pistons?

Re: Yet another 1976 Supercharger project
The engine had done 80K and was frozen on no4 piston. The bores are std and in reasonable condition so I decided to re-build so the engine condition would be known as it is having a blower fitted to it.Loco Lopez wrote:That is sweet! I managed to find 4 rods with good pistons on fleabay. Luckily for me the most of the rod sizes matched the ones I was taking out (2) so I could use the shell bearings from the discarded rods.
Note: This would never be my first choice but these shell bearings are virtually unobtainable. If they were available I would have changed them and the crankshaft main bearings.
I got a set of std rings from a Honda civic 1200 ( there is a thread about them in the tech forum), a full seal kit and a gasket set. Biggest part of the whole deal was getting the insides cleaned out. I hadn't done one of these engines since 1975 but it all came back to me. I don't have any parts left so that is always a good sign.
