Yet another 1976 Supercharger project

#1

Post by Qui-gon »

The donor bike now runs:

Please ignore the fuel tank! Professional impatient idiot, closed course!

The supercharger parts are destined for a 1976 GL1000 which I am rebuilding the engine from. The bike pictured above is a 1977 with quite a good engine but sadly cannot be used courtesy of the DMV's extortion policy.

The Supercharger "kit" was short of a few things, fan, blower bracket, throttle cable bracket and a drive ratio of about 30% overdrive. Not good! Thanks to octane for the drive info from his bike.

The donor bike seen above came with a few goodies which can be used on this project. It came with a 4 into 1 Kerker exhaust (very noisy!), Accel coils/leads and a Dyna s ignition.

I have, I think decided on a colour scheme, frame black, engine red with black covers and silver possibly for the plastics. Still lacking a theme, it is between cafe racer and super motard. SM if I can get round extending the fork legs to allow for the smaller front wheel as I don't want to loose any ground clearance.

More pictures to come!

it's like you're in my head, only farther along.... i think dirt bike forks would be worth looking at but are likely a large amount of work and you'll only have one brake disk (maybe still better than the "brakes" on these things  ) or possibly look for KTM duke/duke2 front end

Think I am going down the cafe racer ish route for now.......The SM look will have to go on the back burner and a bit more research done regarding forks and brakes. I am not sure the forks etc. off modern "heavyweight" dirtbikes were ever designed to suspend and stop something this big. Maybe the bmw boxer twin trailie might?

i would be more worried about the GL frame being able to take the abuse. modern dirtbike forks, even off a 250, are designed to take some serious abuse from jumping off of big things. the brakes are an issue though

Thanks for all the encouragement! A bit more progress yesterday:

Left side camshaft back in along with some of the black painted parts:

Image

Cut this off the end of the right side camshaft:

Image

The standard camshaft oil seal just fits!:

Image

Right side camshaft back in the head. It just needs a cover either making or from a later model without the fuelpump and tacho drive:

Image

Frame mods next on the '76 frame and tearing down the '77 to remove the goodies from it.

That is sweet! I ofter hear people not wanting to rebuilt an engine, but you give me great hope. Was it difficult getting the parts? Did you need oversize pistons?

The engine had done 80K and was frozen on no4 piston. The bores are std and in reasonable condition so I decided to re-build so the engine condition would be known as it is having a blower fitted to it.
I managed to find 4 rods with good pistons on fleabay. Luckily for me the most of the rod sizes matched the ones I was taking out (2) so I could use the shell bearings from the discarded rods.

Note: This would never be my first choice but these shell bearings are virtually unobtainable. If they were available I would have changed them and the crankshaft main bearings.

I got a set of std rings from a Honda civic 1200 ( there is a thread about them in the tech forum), a full seal kit and a gasket set. Biggest part of the whole deal was getting the insides cleaned out. I hadn't done one of these engines since 1975 but it all came back to me. I don't have any parts left so that is always a good sign. lolol Lets hope the bearing gamble pays off!
