Well, OK, I might get married if I ran into a woman who shares my enthusiasm about the next subject:

Supercharging.

I have been evaluating various superchargers for this application. Magna Charger, Fageol, etc. However, I found a sweet little mini roots blower that was originally on a Nissan March Super Turbo. The AMR500. The specs indicate it would be a perfect fit on a goldwing, taking up much less space than either of the two previously mentioned blowers, yet producing an adequate boost of around 6 lbs. According to the charts in my little book, this should result in an increase of HP around 25 - 30% at 7K rpm.

Specs for this blower are:

500cc/ revolution (30.5 cu.in.) With straight, 2 lobe rotors.
It could be over-driven, and make good boost on 1800cc engines,
or Larger if RPM is kept low.
Or it could be under-driven for smaller engines.
Max blower continuous speed is 16,000 RPM
Max intermediate speed is 18,000 RPM
Approx. 9lbs boost at 1.5 crank speed.
Over all length is 6.75", Width is 8", Height from inlet to outlet 5.5"
The 4 bolt inlet & outlet flanges makes it easy to fabricate custom mounts for manifolds, and carbs.

These are available from a dismantler in Australia for a very reasonable price, or you can by them new online at Ebay for about double that.

I am pretty excited to try this thing out.

Wiki explains "Roots" blowers here:

"The Roots type supercharger or Roots blower is a positive displacement lobe pump which operates by pumping fluids with a pair of meshing lobes not unlike a set of stretched gears. Fluid is trapped in pockets surrounding the lobes and carried from the intake side to the exhaust. It is frequently used as supercharger in engines, where it is driven directly from the engine's crankshaft via a belt or, in a two-stroke diesel engine, by spur gears.

It is named for the brothers Philander and Francis Marion Roots of Connersville, Indiana, who first patented the basic design in 1860 as an air pump for use in blast furnaces and other industrial applications. In 1900, Gottlieb Daimler included a Roots-style supercharger in a patented engine design, making the Roots-type supercharger the oldest of the various designs now available. Roots blowers are commonly referred to as air blowers or pd blowers."

If you buy a used blower can you get it restripped? On some they use teflon on the rotors. And this gets worn so they need to be restripped to get the performance back. If the seal isn't good they don't produce the pressure they are capable of. I don't know if you checked out the place I told you about in the PM. They probably restrip rotors but I don't know if they will/can do all brands.

Very interesting info on the blowers. I'm thinking a Roots must be the type they use on Detroit diesels. They are a 2 stroke. I also think they used the 6-71 bower on old drag engines.... maybe they still do. The 6-71 referred to the eng.... 6 for # of cylinders and 71 for the displacement of each cylinder.
How much boost can a GW take , reliably? Loving this post, Richard.

I am trying to not go over 6lbs for reliability sake. This little blower could do much more, but this bike is for street not track, so I am shooting in that range.

What are you planning to feed it for carburetion? I am guessing that's still in the research too. This should be fun to watch, more fun to see in person. One of these days that time lapse camera is going to catch you scratching.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I have not decided on the carb yet. It will be a "suck through" system, and I have to add oil cooling and blow off valves. Don't want that plenum to become a bomb!!!
