This thread has been a great help in my search online for a spare seat for my 78. Strong work.

75-6 foam on 78 pan. The 78 pan is approx 1" longer with sides being different etc.

Has anyone fitted one of these gl1000 seat covers to a gl1100 pan? Mine's an 83 which I read is longer than other years by a couple inches, so maybe the pan would have to be shortened?

I thought I saw a picture of a gl1100 with this type of seat before but maybe it was just something that looked similar, but I can't find it now.

I'm also looking for a picture of a bike that had a ex500 seat adapted which I also can't seem to find now that I'm looking for a seat.

I was there in 1978 to buy a Yamaha dirt bike, and left the proud new owner of a Sulfur Yellow '76. Saw one used in the window while I waited to buy the Yamaha 250, looked at that nuclear reactor of a motor and took it for a ride. I was sold in about 200 yards. It was a 24-month old commuters bike with about 30k on the clock. I was 19, gentlemen. That bike changed my life. But eventually I had to have a newer ride and today I ride a '78 GL, pristine, blue, matching Vetter, just back one hour ago from a 600 miler at a fairly consistent 80 MPH @ about 38-40 MPG. My ass hurts and I need a more comfortable seat. A stocker. My '76 didn't hurt my butt at all, ever, and I rode is 800 miles one night in one shot. My '78 has the original seat w a really nice seat cover on it, but for some reason the seat wants to push me forward. Maybe my bars are too low/short/not tall enough. I removed the taller stockers and put on some shorter 6-inch tall handlebars. Maybe those are pulling me forward. Dunno. Ideas welcome, because I am headed to Big Bend national Park in 85 days and that is 1000 miles. Don't want my butt throbbing from that ride.

You forgot one though.

My 1981 custom ... standard pan ... foam trimmed by me ... leather cover is by a local Mennonite Saddler.

....and probably more comfortable than the 'slab' that's on my '76 .

I wish I could find a good '76. When I owned a '76 in '78, I was 19 and rode that GL 800 miles from El Paso (Ft. Bliss) to Lufkin, TX in one shot. Yes, from 11PM until around 10-11AM the next day I rode that bike, stopping only for gas. My butt never hurt. But the stock seat on my current '78 is uncomfortable. Seems to be too much padding right in the crotch area, and I end up being slowly pushed forward into the tank door hinge after 200 miles or so, and it keeps bugging me after that. So a nice flat '76 sounds golden to me. Can new foam be purchased to rebuild the seat? Is there a template for that?
