Detroit Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

#1

Post by Lucien Harpress »

I was able to participate in the Detroit running of the DGR this year. After going for the first time last year, I'm kind of hooked. The initial plan was to use the yellow GL1000, and I even went so far as to get it up to my brother's place the day before. I spent the night, because he lived about 10 minutes away from the start, and it would be a SUPER long day otherwise. Unfortunately, between arriving and that night, my (new) front tire went flat. So, it was a 4 hour round trip to trailer the 1000 home and grab the Valkyrie.

That said, the actual ride was pretty great. About 170 riders, with a good mix of vintage and new. The ride wasn't downtown this year (which was a bummer- I love old bikes on Belle Isle), it was out in the suburbs. That said, the actual riding portion was quite a bit longer, and quite scenic.

The Janus 450 was quite neat, as was the '65 Moto Guzzi police bike. There were two '76 Goldwings that did show up, along with a pair of 1100s, which was neat. Forgot to ask if they were members, but had a number of great conversations otherwise.

Great photos - with an extended album. It seems like a great time, aside from the flat tire bummer.

I never did one up north. This year was my 7th in Florida. Venice and Naples were small events (15-20 bikes) Sarasota had about 40. Tampa (big city) was the largest (~120) and had some great bikes.
My favorite bike was this 1980's K750 that showed up in Sarasota last year. Any bike with an oil tank made of a glass "Gentleman Jack" bottle is cool by definition.

Now I get it: You built the bike to match the top hat and tails. Distinguished, indeed.
