Yeah. Might have been a combination of stuff. It runs much better now. Just the low speed that’s an issue now. Carbs have to wait a couple of days though, we’re going away on a family trip this weekend.

That is one good thing about machines, they can usually wait for you to get back to them.

Replaced the no name ignition coils with a Bosch 4cyl waste spark coil.

Now she purrs like the middle aged cougar she is. What a relief.
The stall when hard braking to a stop or rocking it on the pegs are also history!!
I noticed that the bike is now consuming a whole lot more power from the regulator/rectifier which I guess is another sign that the new coil is working much better.
I have a micro relay that I will be wiring into the ignition circuit so that the small electronics box doesn’t need to supply the coils with the full power.

Thanks!
Next issue, the speedometer.
I’m guessing it is beyond repair at this point.
The case around the magnet has more or less disintegrated.

It boggles the mind that no one makes a new drop in replacement for it. I mean this speedo was used on a lot of different bikes back in the day.

I think that is the exact problem. There are a million of them out there. If you do a search on Flea Bay there are pages and pages of them available.

Yeah a million in the US and with MPH instead of KMH unfortunately.
Is the CB speedo compatible? Seems like a lot less wiring compared to the 82 GL. Hard to see in the few pics I’ve seen

Not sure what to do about the speedo, but I do like the freedom I get without it ;) Just driving at the speed that feels right for the moment is real nice.

I finally added some horns, a couple of Hella water sealed for like 15USD.

Bike looks great and Speedos do not help much with acceleration or economy. So not bad to wait for the perfect one.

So.
It smokes intermittently from the right cylinders, front right in particular. Also spark plug is very black with oil residue and exhaust has a lot of carbon deposits. Replaced valve seals but no change, it also uses about 1liter oil per 1000km's, so I'm guessing piston rings.
Found a pretty sweet GL1100 motor on ebay, but while I'm at it I was thinking to maybe transplant a 1200 power plant instead.
Read that most of the GL1200 motors will bolt on the 1100 frame without any bigger issues, except for the 1987 due to the bigger stator and that it is not possible to replace the drive shaft with the 1100's.
Will the 1100's exhaust bolt to the 1200 motor?

Found this rather interesting EFI motor, ad is extremely short on info though:
https://goldwing.nl/en/shop/gl1200-ltd- ... perfectly/
An EFI conversion have always been something I'd be wanting to do with an old carburated bike, would be with a custom ECU instead of the Honda variant.

Whichever way I go I will ride the bike as is and topping up oil as needed. It still runs good so any work would be done during the winter season.

The 1200 will certainly drop in just fine. You do need a snap ring groove in the output shaft to secure your driveshaft. The 87 as you pointed out is a little different animal, but if you know a machinist, they can cut a groove into the 1200 output shaft, and then it will work like any other.

You might be able to use the 1100 exhaust on it if you can bend it slightly, the 1200 block is around a 1/4" wider if memory is correct.

Custom ECU is the way to go on these types of conversions.
