My biggest obstacle to starting the big winter project.
Well I have been planning and looking forward to the big project of going ECU controlled EFI and ignition during this winter on my 82 wing. Unfortunately, I am facing a very annoying issue. I'm using my father's extra garage at his place and it's full of junk. I've gone back and forth with him to try and get it cleaned up and cleared out but it just seems to get worse and worse. He has a hard time getting rid of stuff and I don't know if I have the patience to try and go through it with him.
I need some moral support from the bros and some ideas for how to get over this obstacle.

In the over fifty years I have been messing around with motorcycles I have had working conditions that have run the gamete from a patch of mud behind the house, to a shop large enough to hold a motorhome, five bikes, and boat and trailer, with room to spare. And everything in between. If the will is strong an answer will be found. While in Germany I helped a friend haul his BMW engine up six flights of stairs. and helped him spend the winter rebuilding it on his kitchen table. Have used rental spaces to portable sheds. If you have the will... it will get done.

Yea dealing with old folks can be very frustrating. Love my parents dearly but their frugality is beyond ridiculous. They grew up poor in the 30's and still act that way, they are not poor. I understand where it comes from but I can not understand why they can not loosen up some. No way they will ever outlive their money. Hoarding is the opposite with them. They do not want to burden anyone with cleaning out their house when they are gone so they have been getting rid of stuff for years. The 5 kids have quit giving Birthday and Christmas presents because they just get given away. It is challenging

I'd say stake out a place in the garage and claim it as the bike area.
A decicated spot and adequate tools are mandatory requirements for me to do a motorcycle project to the level that I want.
I'm too old to work without a lift anymore.
Done are the days of re-ringing a sportster in the driveway, transmissions on the back porch, rebuilding carburetors on top of the dryer in the laundry room...
All of the possible chaos and distractions of the work area get in the way of doing a good job.

Maybe point out to him that when he is gone, you will just haul it all to the dump. That's what my friend's sons told him about 12 odd bikes in his garage. He got rid of them pretty fast after that.

All tremendous ideas. I'm also the type that needs an organized space with room to put disassembled parts so they don't get lost.

Re: My biggest obstacle to starting the big winter project.
I think I'm reading about myself vis a vis my son in this thread. It's not a good feeling.
I'm pretty messy and disorganized - and I can accumulate. My wife sometimes calls me an invasive species in reference to my messes.
And my son is, well, a bit more organized - not anal, but organized. Luckily, he's gentle on me when he visits or we tackle a project. And perhaps lucky for him, I'm a bit sheepish about my messiness, so I'll do a bit to tidy when I know he'll be helping me out.
Wow. I'll need to do a bit more introspection.
