It helps to get a thin putty knife between the case halves and work it around being careful to not gouge the machined surfaces of the case halves. Once you get it started its relatively easy to work it around. There is no gasket between the halves and there is a sealer between them to keep any leaks from occurring. This sealer (Hondabond or Yamabond) acts like a glue.

That is some good info. Should I find this stuff so I can reapply it when I put this thing back together?

If you mean the Honda/Yama/Kawbond then yes. That is what you sue to put case halves back together. These days I use ThreeBond Liquid Gasket 1194. Same stuff as all the others. I get mine from Z1 Enterprise. If you have dealer local to you they should have something.

Be sure that all case bolts are removed. There are a couple hidden on the left rear side of the engine that are easily missed.

I use Permatex Ultragrey to join the halves.

This will help with the rings once the case is split. Buy the Hastings.

I am curious when you mention gears 'rubbing'. There really is no way for any of the gears to move at all inside the case so I would be curious what you might be talking about.

If you are splitting the case, you mine as well do some other stuff like installing the 1200 chain tensioner etc. Read through the entire thread if you haven't already, it could help.
