front fork info

#1

Post by quakeholio »

I did some looking around the net earler, had a thought in my head relating to the CB750C and how to upgrade the brakes on them, and it morphed and grew.

Anyway, the end result was looking at bearings in the triple tree, and I was supprised by what I saw. Honda has the same bearings in the CB custom in 1980, the GL1100, 1200, and 1500. I don't know of any other models that use the same bearings, but it really leaves the posibility of swaping the front end of my little old 900 with that from a gl1500. I looked at the 1800, and thats a different beast.

So in my little pile of information comes a question, how much improvement has the front end of the goldwing gone through from the 1000 to the 1500? Is it big jumps over the years, or few improvements? Would be a nice upgrade for a old custom that has saging fork springs.

In my opinion they have come along quite a bit regarding stiction and valve configuration. There's also TRAC on the 1100 and 1200's which gives anti dive advantages if that's important to you.

I would guess that the GL forks would be a lot heavier than the CB forks so it may be best to stick with the lighter units that are on your CB.

Fork Swap

#3

Post by terryhowellus »

Is it possible to swap the front forks from an earlier Goldwing Gl1000 (82 down) to an 83 GL1100? From what I can see in my repair manual the earlier forks are easier to rebuild than the TRAC GL1100 forks.

First trick is figuring out what size the fork tubes are. If the numbers match then life takes a step to the easy life.
