Water Pump Mech seal remove/replace

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

Water Pump Mech seal remove/replace

#1

Post by docfishr »

I recently got a great deal on a beautiful 78 CX500 because the Mech seal leaked and the PO did not want to go the expense of having the engine dropped to replace it. ( shop wanted $100 for the seal and approx $1100 for labor. So the PO put this great low mile (20K) on CL for $750.
I found a website from a guy in Australia with detailed info on how to do the job without dropping the engine. Cost me $42 for the seal on ebay. And the method works like a charm. Dont see it listed so I thought i"d offer it to this site. It's easy to do and will save you a bunch!

Um, that link is to somewhere on your hard drive.

I think the page you mean is here http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/cx500/cx500.html

Shep & I go back a long time on the forums. We don't always agree on the best way to do things, but all of his methods do work.

The biggest drawback of the in-the-frame mech seal replacement is that you can't change the oil seal while youare in there, and if the mech seal needs replacement the oil seal can't be in much better shape.

Hmmm....

That link is no longer valid. Anyone got a valid version? My '82 CX-C is leaking and will need fixing. And, if there's a way to do it without dropping the motor, I'm all for it.

But remember that there's probably a 25+ year old oil seal behind it that you can't get at without dropping the engine.
