Quail Lodge Pics - Updated

#1

Post by bum »

So I took some pics at the Quail Lodge gathering, now remember I majored in lunch in School so I missed a lot of pics. I met up with Cookie, Spenser, Brian, Richard, RoachB , Randakk. It was great to finally put faces on the names!! And I don't have one picture of any NGW member in attendance except Randall , one of me and Craig Vetter, (is he a member??? ). But the venue was beautiful, sunny skies, moderate temperature , stunning bikes, rare bikes (ever heard of a Maserati motorcycle?), A replica TZ750 which Kenny Roberts rode, a jet bike etc. The craftsmanship of the bikes was outstanding and wings were well represented by some very sweet rides you guys who entered should be proud. My wife was impressed, and that's saying a lot... on the drive home we talked about next years show. I envisage doing the whole enchilada, the cruise, the racetrack laps, entering a bike in the show and she was agreeing. But one thing....next year someone else has to take pics , but wait, maybe someone did!!! dancr dancr dancr

Bum nailed it; lot's of food (all you could eat) but no beer or wine unless you paid extra :-? I followed the Central Coast Classic MC Club up the coast with Chris Sidah and we stopped for lunch in Big Sur. I met up with Starket and his wife Laura in an English pub in Monterey and we had a beer or two, then Chris and I tucked in for the night at a friends not far from the pub. At the Quail, we met up with Cookie and Spencer, and all sat together for lunch, including Starket and wife (no chair for Bum and his wife, sorry..) then Spencer and I strolled around the show, having a good time laughing at the anouncer. A lot of different images were evoked when he told people where to find the "feeding stations". As a former "Event pro" I was a little disapointed in a coupler of things; not enough tables and chairs, the choice of music (techno, I think they missed their audience) it got better later when it was live...

..but what was most dissapointing to me was when the announcer, as he strolled past the 'wing section, said "This year we're featuring Honda Goldwings..now this next bike.." That's it!! I thought maybe a little bio might be in order for the featured bike of the show...That's enough of ranting; those were just little things. I enjoyed the show emensely and it was great to meet up with members I hadn't met before...I took about 105 good pics and will post a link soon maybe...photobucket won't come up for me right now....http://s622.photobucket.com/albums/tt30 ... The odd looking bike is a Motomorphic, second prototype model. They are building these in Petaluma, CA and have a web site.

Can you spot the Randakk in these pictures?

Highlights.
Great weather. Although there were scattered showers on Sunday, Saturday was a bit breezy, but otherwise a great day in Carmel.

Others I spoke to said that this year had about triple the entrants; this bodes very well for next year.

The venue is fantastic. I've attended automotive shows on the green at The Quail, and as a spectator, found them to be well run. As an entrant, I found that everything went smooth as silk. Registration, a good lunch, assistance in positioning the bike, attendant to help with staging the bike as a class winner, and guidance onto the awards podium were all first class.

Virtually every bike there was unbelievably clean. Many of these bikes are so thoroughly spotless that it's hard to believe they are ever actually used.

I didn't stay for the auction, but there were quite a few that I would have liked in my garage. Good thing I left my checkbook at home, and headed home before I remembered I could have used a credit card.

Even more than the bikes, I appreciated meeting Messrs. Washington and Vetter. I found both to be down-to-earth and very friendly. Both of them took a bunch of pictures of my bike, I hope I can get some of those pictures. One in particular was of myself, Craig, and Randall standing by my bike. That's a keeper!

I missed a lot of the NGW guys, but did chat briefly with Robert from Salinas, and Steve from Washington State.

Overall, it was a great experience for a first timer. And not expecting anything other than hoping not to embarass myself with a substandard entry, winning the Vetter prize was really unexpected. Thankfully, I didn't stall it, or drop it, when I rolled it up on the podium.

Awesome!!! Now to get an NGW members bike to win at "Riding into History" and "The AMA Vintage Days". Can't buy that kind of advertisement.

Congrats Al!
