CAFE MAXIMUS

#1

Post by Norbert R »

Hi Guys,

This is my '77 GL1000 - picked her up on a trailer as a non-runner, but unmolested. She has been sitting for 2 years.
52.jpg
The photo is too flattering... there is quite a lot of neglect.

The plan is to get her sorted mechanicaly, and do some Cafe Racer mods with some Bobber elements too.
The whole idea was inspired by Octane's Bulldog (yeeees, another one ! :orange )
In fact Octane's build led me to this amazing site, and it is all the truly fantastic members here and all the help an info available that made me decide on a Goldwing. I have no experience with building bikes, and very little mechanical knowledege, but you guys have created such an incredible resource that I feel quite confident to tackle this project.
Here's a photoshop'd image of where I want to go:

Here goes nothing, wish me luck ! :crosso

Back again (figuring this build thread business out).
Styling wise, I want to keep it as retro as possible. I'd like the bike to look like it could be a factory special from the sixties. That's why I wanted a pre '78 with spoked wheels and the shelter with just the fuel gauge ( love the lines of this "tank" , to me the nicest version..)

I also have quite a nice bike to start with, don't want to butcher it. So the mods will largely be reversible - no major surgery on the frame.
Another consideration is practicality. I want to ride this bike, so it needs to be comfortable and usable.
Game plan: get her running, lower suspension, smaller lights & indicators, lower handle bars, Triumph Speed Triple seat, custom paint, powder coat frame, bob rear fender, remove front fender (maybe), lower gauges, exhaust undecided.
It's winter now in South Africa, so I hope to have all this done come summer.

I saw the title and had to check this out. You picked a cool name, a good bike, you have loads of ambition and the best forum buddies in the business! Let the project begin!

I like the plan and it looks like you've got a good canvas to start on.

Hi Norbert, You must be the kids biggest hero now. In the early 70's my cousin had a 50cc yamaha with handelbars similar as LastMohawk has on his bike. Just the u facing forward and the grips coming in from the side. In todays words, it was super kool that time.

hi Werner, they are loving it, can't keep them out of the garage, they both insist on getting a tool and "helping"
