cable lube

#1

Post by 5speed »

what does everyone use?
I have several new throttle and clutch cables I want to lube.
Is the specific cable lube the only way to go or is there something else folks use?
I was thinking fluid film.

There is a specific cable lube oil that I don't have handy for a picture, yet any bike parts seller will have it. FortNine for sure. The one I have is an aerosol can with a mostly green and white label about 1/2 the size of a spray paint rattle can.
I like the little metal cable lube attachment (separate purchase item) that forces the lube into the cables rather than all over you. :-D

Backyardbob used to tell the story of his winter maintenance routine. One of the things he did was remove his cables and tape a bag of gear oil on them and let them hang until it came out clean on the other end. Last I talked to him he was over 400,000 miles on his clutch and throttle cables.

I attach a funnel with duct tape, hang the cable up, pour in some clean motor oil and wait for it to work its way through. You can't see it in the pic but I'm pointing at a drop coming out the bottom (you also can't see the garbage can that it is dripping into)
