A bit of a road trip

#1

Post by Liam »

For the next few days, I am going on a bit of a road trip. Something I have not done in a while is bought a motorcycle. Well I have gone and done it, something came up for sale recently that I could not resist. I will post some stuff about my journey for the next few days. Probably not of interest to many on here but I am going to post anyway, so there.

Next part of my trip is across South Wales and into England. My daughter is living in London so I have some stuff to do for her, collect some furniture and fit a few shelves. This ferry brings us to a place called Fishguard in Wales. Ferry gets in at 23.00 so I will stay the night there.

Just looked. I did not have a legitimate feel for the distance between Fishguard and London. 250 miles so basically it is about half the width of Virginia. I have been to several ports in the UK but never spent any time inland. My Nephew is Commanding a US Air Force Squadron a little bit North East of London. I think my Sister is flying over in a few weeks for another visit. Be safe Liam and have fun

The island of Great Britain is not that big compared to the vastness of the United States. I suppose the same could be said for Europe in general. If you took a flight from Dublin you could be in Amsterdam in a little over 1 hour. Paris the same. Frankfurt 2 hours. I wish I didn't hate flying I would like to visit a ton of places using a cheap airline like Ryanair. Sometimes they have flights to European destinations for tens of euro. We went to Israel a couple of weeks ago, everyone thought we were nuts, but we saw only a peaceful place. Tel Aviv is only a 5 hour flight from London normally, but since the Iran episode a lot of airlines stopped flying direct. We had to stop in Barcelona on the way out and in Rhodes on the way back.

It is now 21.45 and this ferry gets in to port at 23.00 so not long to go now. I have a hotel booked so I will make my way there and leave for London in the morning. Tomorrow morning I will depart London and go to Lancaster to collect my new purchase. After that I will travel up into Scotland to a ferry port called Stranraer. I will cross over then into Northern Ireland a Place called Larne. I will travel back then to the Republic via Belfast probably on Monday. The trip will take me across Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland which are the 4 countries in the United Kingdom.

Sitting here on the boat just relaxing and people watching. Over to my right there is a small group of Welsh people and I am trying to tune into their conversation and they are switching on the fly between Welsh and English. I cannot understand a word of course in Welsh and the English is not much easier. I regret not learning another language. I have a working knowledge of English, and a fair amount of Irish. My daughter on the other hand Fluent English, Irish, German and of all things Yiddish. She is learning Hebrew presently.

My Bud in SC works with Welsh guys at GE and has them out to the house occasionally. I can't understand them at all.

Quite a nice little jaunt!!

Last time I was in the Irish Sea was in '76. Transited it from south to north returning on my last FBM patrol on our way to the Firth of Clyde and the town of Danoon in Holy Loch. Did it submerged and it looked like every other place in the world that I visited while in the Navy, the inside of a submarine. :(
