Hello naked friends. After receiving some valuable input to yesterday's video, I did some more digging. In this video, I show that cylinder #4 was not firing and that the air mixture needle on cylinder #2 was blocked. The carb balancing that I had done needed re-balancing. I found the problem with spark on cylinder #4 and I was able to improve the idle mixture situation on cylinder #2. I feel that I have made significant progress but that I still have work to do. How many turns out was that mixture screw?

hi Len,
I was thinking about your finding the loose primary bullet terminals which caused one of the 2 ignition coils to not function.
My thoughts have been going back to how corroded those bullet terminals appeared to be. Corrosion.
hmmm... I wondered did Len unplug all the multiple bullet terminal connections in that area and fully address the deterioration of their complementing male/female terminals ... and then,
Hey, how's about the condenser assembly case, itself, and its physical connection to a low resistance ground path where it is mounted onto the front side of the battery frame, as well!!

One other thing that usually helps with the off idle response is to reduce the idle air jet in the brass elbows on the carb sides from the oe 115’s to a 110. Subtle but it helps. Things are sounding better

Parts of this video were a little less clear than they should have been. What I was trying to demonstrate was that, even when I turned the mixture screw all the way in and a long way out on #2, it did not have any effect. Once I was able to clear the needle seat, I the performed the idle-drop on that mixture screw like the others. I believe that it ended up being 2 and1/2 turns out; similar to the others. Sorry for the confusion.

Good morning Cliff. Thanks as usual for the detailed response. Everything you suggested, I have done during the project. All bullet connectors have been taken apart, checked, snugged-up where required and reassembled. I installed a 10 ga. designated ground from the condenser to the frame.

That would be easy enough to do. Thanks, I'll look through my carb parts to see if I happen to have those.

What valve lash clearance number are the intake and exhaust valves set at?

Valve lash at .004. I will open them up to .006 soon but did not want to confound the recent adjustments with another variable. Re: compression readings, I tested very early on once I got her running steadily. Remember that the bike had been sitting for thirteen years. My readings were: 115, 110, 105, 110. Now that I have taken the bike out a couple of times, I am anticipating higher readings. I will ride a bit more, then report my findings.

Once I removed the idle-mix needle on carb #2, I used a tapered red straw on a can of carb cleaner to blast out the bottom of the hole, (the seat?). That clearly helped but....could I also have probed the needle seat with a thin wire like a high E guitar string? I admit that I tried but very gently. The seat felt rubbery upon probing. Here is the needle along with the wire.

It felt rubbery because you were hitting the bowl gasket.

Thank you. I'm glad that I had enough sense not to push that wire. I did read in the forum that you can sometimes clear a plugged air mixture opening using the red plastic tube on carb cleaner. With the rubber gasket at the bottom, where does the carb cleaner actually go? In my case, after spraying the carb cleaner into the opening, I noticed that there seemed to be air pressure causing the cleaner to bubble back at me for a bit. You have been very attentive and patient with me and I appreciate it greatly.
