thinning the herd

#1

Post by Whiskerfish »

I have accepted that 4 bikes is just too many at this point in life. Once I get the shop organized a bit I will be bringing both 1000's up to date and then listing them for sale. Plus I will be dumping all of my 1000 surplus. A couple of engines and a multitude of spare stuff in conditions from scrap to NIB. I detest shipping so don't bother asking.

My physical abilities are starting to take a hit and due to that my interests are changing some. I plan to keep the 84 and the 08 as long as possible but I am starting to order parts for a trail rider build on the Wife's Wrangler. Nothing too dramatic but something for us to do together on weekends when I don't feel up to riding the bike. That is going to take fairly significant space and money so some stuff needs to go.

Nothing is going to happen quickly but if anyone has interest in a bulk buy contact me via PM

I feel your pain. As I 'm almost 80 and have a wife who is handicap, bike time is limited. Two bikes seem to be my limit. Parts have to go.

Yea problem is I have a LOT of 1000 parts to get rid of. For one reason or another I have parted out 6 or 8 bikes over the years. I have unloaded some stuff but have a lot left. Pretty confident I can sell the 2 bikes but I really really do not want to see all the "Stuff" go in a Dumpster.

most of the stuff I have is 1200. Have parted out 5 or6 in the last few years. Most of my 1000 stuff is drive shafts, and a couple of frames. Not that concerned about the small stuff.

I thinned out my stuff a few years back. The time and space it cleared up, both in the garage , shed, and my mind, was amazing and well worth it, for me.

I thinned my herd/hoard a couple of years ago too.
I have now re- accumulated just about the same amount of "good stuff" again.

Filled the first of many trash barrels today. I don't now why I thought I might need 6 spare battery boxes and approximately 20 clutch, throttle, speedo, tach cables. 9 sets of coils and wires, 3 final drives. etc etc etc...
Tomorrow is trash day so that stuff went to the street tonight. All the metal stuff got set on the curb and the metal man picked it up in short order. He is gonna love me over the next few weeks.

Fired up the 75. The battery needed a little boost but she runs good. After I get a ride on her to make sure everything is working she will be for sale.

I have 3 boxes of stuff like 2 cube foot each from parted bikes that I have not dug through in a decade. I need to build the courage to throw them out en masse but I know as soon as I do I will regret it!! If I can get rid of those and the 2 engines and the engine stand that will clear up a Lot of floor space. Most of the really good stuff is on the shelves and I can take my time sorting through that. I also put the big outfitters tent up on craigslist.

I ordered all 4 ball joints for the Sahara today so it would be nice if I can do that in the shop instead of in the driveway. Trying to tighten up the front end before I start working bigger tires etc.

I too find myself in the same place as Wiskerfish only not to the same degree with my hoard of parts. I do have a 1975 frame with title if anyone is interested, no 1975 motor though. Also a 1979 rolling frame with title and as well as a 1976 motor ready to run. New head gaskets and valve seals and the heads were lapped to insure flat surface. Lots of extras parts, seats, wheels, a part of Lesters with the six hole front wheel. Hit me up with your needs, prefer not to ship. I'm located in Columbus, Ohio.
Whiskerfish, that picture of your two motors really hurts.

I also have a couple of front Lesters. They might find a corner to live in for a while. Getting rid of the Engines and the stand allows me to put a second bike in the right side bay. So hopefully I can get the Jeep inside in the left Bay tomorrow.

I really want to keep going on this but today is a body rest day and tomorrow is 4 ball joints on the Jeep. Wait and see how crippled I am after that so maybe Sunday I can start sorting more stuff out.

I cleaned up and organized the shop some this morning so when the Wife finished her grocery shopping this afternoon I got started on the Jeep. Generally when the instruction sheet has "Big Hammer" under tools required I chuckle. No joke this time!! First the disc was seriously stuck then the bearing carrier was really stuck. So one side is basically done but needs reassembled, then tomorrow I can tear apart the other side. After this I have a couple more steering components to upgrade then I will get the alignment done and then we can bolt up some bigger tires

Suspension parts being stuck on cars/ jeeps is why I find enjoyment working on motorcycles instead. So much easier.
