Tires

#1

Post by QUEEENlE »

Called the shop where my bike is being fitted with new tires today. Seems like it has been one excuse after another. I wanted to know the reasoning for having to wait for the "front tire". He told me that the tread should match the rear. Can someone clarify this for me? or tell me that this was just an excuse on his part. This is all so new to me I feel like I am being made fun of or not being taken seriously.

No, its doesn't have to. Only if your worried about cosmetics. Go down there and get your bike, take it somewhere else.

sounds like someone is trying to baffle you with his bullshit. they DO NOT need to match, but they should be roughly the same heat range and load range. almost every bike i own has mismatched tires and with no ill effects.
the front and rear tires are almost never the same size or the same width so whats to match?....the brand?.....the PRICE? that must be it!
please use caution in dealing with these people. show em that your a chick that knows whats up.....good luck........T

The previous owner of the wing took it to this shop ... it was close..and as the tires were horrible it was the best option. I tried callin him today .. no answer..the last i talked to him ... he was waitin for the front tire with matchin tread pattern...I honestly dont know what to think...I have no one to help back me up... I feel like I am at his will.

Queenie

Dont wait for back-up. If you are not satifie with the service you are getting, go down to the shop and tell them you are picking the bike up the following day, say at 5pm and would thay make sure the bike is ridable by then.
If things do not go well, use the tatic that a lady rider I know uses. Stand in the showroom and start telling ever customer that walks in how the shop is treating you, be prepeared to do this more than once and if they stopyou going in the shop stand outside and tell any customer your plight before they walk in the shop.. Its suprising how the shop owners l start to co-operatewhen they see a few customers walkaway.

If you wait outside long enough I'm sure you can catch "Big Bubba" as he's walking in to get some chain lube..... Ask if he's got a second......explain your plight, bat your eyes and wiggle your butt ;) ("Heeeeyyyyyyy sailor")....I'm sure he'll help. If that don't work......flip him a $10 to pretend he's your beau and kick some ass.

I can't totally disregard the matching tire theory......It's more cosmetics..I know on sport bikes we swap fronts for different turning characteristics. Every front tire(Hell, any tire) regardless of what's printed on the sidewall have different shapes and actual sizes. You can't argue that the manufacturers design their tires(fronts and rears) to work together. Will there be any negative effects from "unmatched" tires?? It's VERY unlikely.

Get your bike out of there or bring them a tire.

I just hope that you can get you bike out of that shop without having to do more then ask. If you think you can pull the wheel off of the bike then do that, find a tire that will fit that has the things you are looking for and take it into a tire shop. I do this on my my GS1100 and got it done for around $10. My brother in law took the wheel into the motorcycle shop and charged him something like $50 for the same thing.

It's critical to get a shop you trust, and I feel sorry that your sex might be a handycap in this area Queenie. Good luck on getting the wing back in your hands.

So what if he did, what is he going to do, hold your bike hostage? It is amazing how hard it is to find a good shop, luckily a friend owns one and he also has a mint '76 GL1000 LTD, so he offers a lot of help on mine.

I am going to add my $0.02 on tires, this is not as important on Wings, but on the sportier of models it is, but mostly a liability issue. On bikes ridden harder and faster, tires make a huge difference and most tire companies will only recommend matched sets of tires since they only test them in matched sets, and they have no idea how they handle when you mix and match, so they have to discourage you from doing that. On one of my other bikes, I mixed same brand, different model tires, and when both were brand new, I rode away from the shop on a sunny warm day and made it about half a mile away when I almost turned around and asked for my old tires back, my motorcycle became the most ill handling thing I had ever ridden, even in a straight line under braking, it flet like going straight was the last thing it wanted to do, but after the tires warmed up and the mold release wore off, things got better.

So when mechanics/shops say you should match your tires, they are only following what the tire companies tell them, because if they do other wise and something happens, they can be held accountable, but like I said, this is just my $0.02.
