My pressure testing air pump and cfairweather's New Tool for Float Bowl Level Verification work very well together. Peri

Here we go... I've heard the universally practiced methods to gravity pressure liquid leak test an assembled carburetor rack Works Very Well for thoroughly knowledgeable and Complete carburetor repairs.
I'm different, have only one complete set of GL carburetors and am satisfied the system I am presenting here answers my need for information re: individual carburetor float bowl fluid level verification and pressure testing the fuel inlet circuits, all at the same time.
I see no practical purpose for a hand operated vacuum pump when I check a pressurized delivery, float valve needle regulated liquid supply circuit. ( no, I don't care ;) )

anyways--

I've already posted my Positive review tumb2 and several photos of Cedric's latest design, in use, in his informational Topic. when? 3/15/'24 -- photos on page2
https://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 39#p823739

At that time, I stated (Cedric) cfairweather's New Tool(s) and my thumb operated air pressure pump would work well together

I would even say it is a great tool to start with
Agreed Doug tumb2
This excellent Float Bowl liquid Level Verification Tool and my *must have* carburetor pressure test air pump tool, to verify if liquid fuel circuit sealing components are intact. ;)

'nuff said :)
-
-I went back to the carburetors *rack* testing bench (tailgate) April 9th to photograph the combined usefulness of Cedric's float bowl fluid level verification fittings and my thumb operated pressure testing air pump assembly., together.
-
20240407_142622.jpg
-
-I had un-intentionally rapidly released 25psi air pressure during a carburetors' leakage testing session at least one year ago and the gauge needle dinged the 0psi stop. :( okay. Just live with it. No re-adjustment possible.
-
20240407_140640 - 5psi error.jpg
-
After completely filling the float bowls (see the isopropyl levels in the transparent tubes) through a funnel and hose attached to the *rack* inlet hose barb fitting, the funnel is removed from that same supply hose and the pressure testing air pump was installed and directly exerting fluid contact pressure against all the rubber sealing components (plenum and 4 carburetor flange seals) and all 4 float valve set needles and seats. I pressurized the wet fuel supply circuits above the 15psi reading you see on the gauge face. Corrected, the pressure gauge face needle reading is 10psi. It held there. Carburetors 3 and 1 are shown in this photograph.
-
20240407_155423 (1).jpg
-
My pressure tester hose wasn't long enough to allow the pressure gauge face to be repositioned towards the camera when photographing the numbers 2 and 4 carburetors view.
After a lot of manipulation with 'Paint' I was finally successful to superimpose the unchanged -- during *rack* 180 degree repositioning -- pressure gauge face needle reading onto this next photograph.
-
20240407_161441.jpg
-
-
I found it interesting that if I hand pumped air pressure against the isopropyl alcohol contents in the assembled carburetors rack in its normal upright orientation, above 10psi, the gauge face display would intermittently indicate pressure leakage was occuring somewhere in the pressurized liquid supply circuit. Most times silent...a subdued pip might be audible in a few cases. hmmmmmm??? I couldn't see any witness of isopropyl leaking into the plenum, nor the carburetor throats exposed vacuum piston bores to look down directly into the primary and secondary main fuel jet emulsion tubes. The isopropyl float bowl fluid level in all 4 verification tubes never budged.
double hmmmmmmm??? :-?

After a few minutes, I wondered if my pressure testing air pump set-up was involved. Flipping the *rack* upside down to allow the cantilevered weight of all 4 float assemblys onto their respective float valve set needle pin, I found none of them yielded to 20+ psi air pressure. The pressure gauge steadily remained at the highest achieved air pump pressure reading. tumb2

I returned the *rack* to its normal upright orientation and retested the float bowl fluid levels and pressurized resistance to fluid leaks again with isopropyl test fluid. Same verifiable results.

That's it . Got nothing else to say about my presentation. Long winded? Definitely, but this is MY thread. ;)

Done.

My expectations...use diagnostic tools in concert

Post by gltriker »

noooooooo, Jeff, I'm quite satisfied my verifications method leaves no mysteries to ponder. ;)

My expectation would be that - as Dirty Dave did last year - by simply (Very Creatively !!) re-purposing a turkey baster bulb for the system pressurizing task, stop fretting/wringing one's hands/etc., to isolate the exact location/s and cause/ s of gasoline leakage in their problematic carburetor *rack* .
a $30 or less pressure tester air pump is a very good tool investment.

I finally got back in earnest to the rebuild of the fire damaged motorcycle.
Please, go back to Post#385 and find 4 new photos dated 6/13.2024 now reside there, too.

I had stated :
Pulling the engine is a big job for this old dude to perform.

After removing both exhaust headers and the fuel tank I resigned myself pulling the engine is necessary, too.

I was very surprised the gasoline fire left very little witness of the event underneath on the concrete floor.

As I go forward with this rebuild after the fire, I find things...

during the 10/06/2023 fire, the fuel valve flag lever was sitting positioned to pointing straight up to Reserve.
I moved the flag to this position several weeks later, just to see if it would still move. Surprisingly, it moved smoothly.
20240614_144550.jpg
*
I believe this passage connects to the Reserve pickup pipe. ( updated information: Yes, that's correct. :oldies
*
20240614_151639.jpg
*
Disassembly reveals the rubber gasoline flow valving disc was compromised, too.
Other than having been discolored with carbon, the metal components of the fuel valve are not injured.

I had purchased an extra randakk ' Petcock - Rebuild Kit - Viton ' several years ago, eventually located the Kit and reassembled the now internally clean petcock valve with the new Viton rubber components.

Examined the fuel tank's inner POR-15 coating post fire condition

#402

Post by gltriker »

Thanks Jeff 😎

I borrowed a son-a-mine's Milwaukee inspection scope and tried to examine trike's fuel tank POR-15 coating (applied 2012) post 🔥 condition.
I struggled to process/orient myself exactly where inside the tank I was glancingly looking at .
I found several spots nearest the external proximity of the fuel pump barbecue.
Several moments I would observe a bubble in the POR-15 that looked a bit similar to the small fluid filled blisters on the left side of my forehead after the 🔥 event. 🤔
Although the inspection scope did not have a record feature , I was somewhat successful to photograph through the filler neck with my cell phone.

A thorough cleanup and repaint of the tank outside and refurbish of the petcock will put that section of fuel supply back to good health again. 👍

Trepidation weighs heavy re: water that entered all 4 cyĺinders when October 6th fire was extinguished

I Agree with your assessment, Jeff :) tumb2

:) Finally, here's Cranking Compression test results performed with a new battery after I worried for many months, that all 4 cylinders' combustion chamber components may not have been spared water intrusion injuries from the fire extinguishing water hose spray that had entered their wide opened intake ports and spark plug holes.

Cylinders 1, 2 and 3 Cranking cylinder compression test results were relatively similar when I compared them to this testing sessions results post: note Cylinder #2 compression test result has always been 10-ish psi greater than #s 1, 3 and 4.

a historically low Cylinder # 4 test result has yet to be determined why it is 15-ish psi lower than when tested in the above link :-? ( 155psi vs 170psi)

A cylinder pressure leakdown rate test session will be utilized next. I have suspicions a rusty goober I spotted with the borescope on the lowest edge of one of 4 pistons was located in this cylinder... :(

Here's the individual cylinder leakdown rate test numbers I had recorded for this engine, August, 2022
